Things That Do Not Work Together: Trump, Republicans and the Law

Trump proved the first time around that laws meant little to him. His recitation of the Presidential Oath of Office was just air passing over his vocal chords. If we are dumb enough as a nation to give him another chance, all bets are off.

There’s a fact about Donald Trump that keeps getting shuffled to the bottom of the deck: he is a convicted felon awaiting sentencing. And he has more criminal trials annoyingly waiting for the outcome of the November election.

Meanwhile he is committing more crimes. For example, he has reportedly been on the phone with the Israeli Prime Minister advising him against actions that would bring about a cease fire in Gaza. His “thinking” is that Biden and Harris would have a win if there was a cease fire, so he is against it. Leaving aside the bloodthirsty immorality of that, he is direct violation—not his first—of the Logan Act by doing this.

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

Here we see the leader of the “Law and Order” party blatantly acting in a criminal manner. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, “Doh!” Criminals commit crimes. That’s why they are called criminals.

The Office of President is charged with the faithful implementation of the laws of the United States. The Constitution states: the president shall “take care that the laws be faithfully executed…”

Trump proved the first time around that laws meant little to him. His recitation of the Presidential Oath of Office was just air passing over his vocal chords. Luckily he was somewhat constrained by responsible people from fully following through on the excesses he so clearly desired. But this time around, if we are dumb enough as a nation to give him another chance, all bets are off.

His people learned from their mistakes and the constraints that hampered them back then and they have a clear plan of what he and they will do: Project 2025. Say goodbye to Democracy if he wins.

Right now the tide has turned against Trump in a big way. Each day as the Democratic National Convention rolls forward becomes worse than the last one for him. As he spoke to a tiny crowd in a Michigan town, infamous for its KKK connections, the Harris/Walz campaign filled two sports stadiums in two different cities. This will only feed his already massive crowd-size inferiority complex.

But the fact is that no matter how things seem to be going, the danger of Trump returning to the White House is too great for us to be anything but pessimistic until we have overwhelmingly beaten him at the polls. The victory has to be a massive landslide the likes of which has never been seen before. This is doable now. But it ain’t done till it’s done.

Until we see the final numbers on November 6th, even then we will only get to heave a tentative sigh of relief. It took 60 court losses challenging the 2020 election to convince no one on Trump’s side that he had lost. He still maintains the lie. Why? Because he’s a criminal committing more crimes and fears jail more than anything else. In his mind, screw the law. But that’s not all. He’s a criminal and to him laws are for suckers.

Trump thinks his “truth” is the only one that matters. He’s finding out the hard way, everyday now, what this means for his future. Be prepared for more outbursts, tantrums, threats of violence, accusations of persecution and other finger-pointing at others from this shattering “icon” of law and order and his accomplices as November approaches.

And don’t let up the pressure in the least.
