Right this minute members of the House of Representatives and Senate who have failed to act to restrain Trump in his violations of his oath of office are actually guilty of the same offenses.
Let’s start with the definition of accomplice: An accomplice is defined as a person who knowingly, voluntarily, or intentionally gives assistance to another in (or in some cases fails to prevent another from) the commission of a crime.
When we take stock of the fact that the guy in the Oval Office is by all visible evidence a career criminal, it puts an entire new aspect on the Republican Party and the MAGA movement. The legal definition of accomplice is blunt. But there is also an ethical aspect to this.
When someone is aware of a crime and fails to do anything about it, even report that it happened, it also becomes their crime. Sure there can be some extenuating circumstances. Say, you’re in a liquor store when a guy pulls out a gun and robs it. Interfering could cost you your life. Not a great scenario. But then assisting afterwards and giving data to the police would be pretty useful in preventing future incidents from the same robber.
What does this have to do with the Republican Party? Only everything. Each and every member of both houses of Congress took an oath of office to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution, the foundation of law in our country. With the wanton acts of violation being committed by Trump on a daily basis, not only have these people not opposed these crimes, they’ve pitched in to help him.
Did you know that violating one’s oath of office is an actual crime?
18 U.S.C. 1918:
“Whoever violates the provisions of section 7311 of title 5 that an individual may not accept or hold a position in the Government of the United States or the government of the District of Columbia if he (1) advocates the overthrow of our constitutional form of government [and] shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year and a day or both.”

Admittedly, some members of the House who have stirrings of conscience about their oath and duty get harassment and death threats from Trump minions—or Marjorie Taylor Greene may dress them down on the floor—to help quell those urges.
Surprisingly there are actually laws in the United States against standing by and doing nothing when seeing a crime in progress. In the final episodes of the Seinfeld TV series, writer Larry David used this to great effect.
In the series finale shows, Jerry and his friends make an emergency landing in the town of Latham, Massachusetts. While waiting for the airplane to be repaired, they witness an overweight man named Howie getting carjacked at gunpoint. They make fat jokes while Kramer films the theft on his camcorder. Howie tells an officer nearby, who arrests Jerry and his friends in accordance with a new Good Samaritan law that requires bystanders to help out in such a situation.
Right now every Republican in Congress is standing by and doing the same thing as the fictional Seinfeld cast. But nobody is calling them out.
Trump has usurped Congress’s authority to levy tariffs, endangering the economy of the entire country. Congress’s response? Zip. Trump is acting against law firms’, media companies’, protestors’ and other’s rights to free speech and assembly. Response from a single Congressional Republican? Nada. Trump is trying to circumvent the 14th Amendment and threatening the revocation of citizenship. Not so much a squeak from any Republicans in the House.
By law, Congress has a duty to act to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. They have the power to end this slide to dictatorship. Some are probably intimidated and scared to speak up. Some like the idea of a dictatorship and simply lied when they took their oath. Those would probably be the same culprits that called the January 6th Insurrection a tourist visit.
Once again the ultimate power to obstruct the encroachment of fascism falls to us, individual citizens. We, every single one of us, has the same duty to the Constitution as every other government official and member of the legislature.
A hell of a lot of Americans died the last time fascism became firmly entrenched around the world. There is no need for a repeat of that, ever. But we have to act now with the most powerful weapons we have: our voices.
Go to the Congressional website and find the contact data for your representatives and senators. Use every channel available and turn up the demand so loud, we can’t be pawned off as “aging hippies,” as Reichsführer Steven Miller chooses to call any who protest.
It is time to remind the people with the power—that we granted them—that they still work for us and demand they do their jobs.
