For decent, faithful, patriotic human beings who call this place home and who want to leave this place more compassionate and just than they found it, today is No Kings Day.

A friend texted me last night and said she was so bummed that she missed No Kings Day, as she had important family plans that were scheduled long before the protests were announced.

“Well, no worries,” I said, “you didn’t miss it. Tomorrow is No Kings Day, too.”

No, I assured her, she hadn’t gotten the date wrong, but she also hadn’t missed her chance.

While yesterday was a beautiful, breathtaking reminder of the collective might of people who refuse to live under tyranny, it isn’t resigned to a date on the calendar.

Today is No Kings Day, too.

Today, you will have the opportunity to declare with clarity and volume, exactly who you are, the people and causes that matter to you, and the ugliness you will not stand for.

Today, you are invited to step into the glorious light of another day here, and through your voice and your hands and your steady, strong, once-in-history, never-to-be-repeated presence, to craft the nation you dream of seeing.

Today, you get the chance to spend yourself on behalf of people whose rights and freedoms and worth are under attack.

Today, you get to stand up to the bullies and the bigots who prowl our streets and school board meetings and congressional offices, and to let them know that they will not drag this nation into the abyss.

Today, you have another opportunity to tell the fascists and the Nazi sympathizers that you will not allow their vile intentions to go unchallenged.

Today, you can remind that amoral, narcissistic, repugnant man-child in the Oval Office that he will not succeed, that we will prevail, that America will not tolerate his efforts to repeat the worst of history here..

Today, friend, you can show up and beautifully alter the day.

You can do something historic.

Yesterday was No Kings Day.

Today is too.

Tomorrow will be as well.

For decent, faithful, patriotic human beings who call this place home and who want to leave this place more compassionate and just than they found it, today is No Kings Day.

Every day here is.
