Former Trump attorney Sydney Powell now has to defend herself against a massive lawsuit brought by one of the voting technology companies she ranted against when trying to overturn the 2020 election results.
And what is her defense? Basically to call all the people who believed her—Trump and Qanon accolytes—stupid.
After filing numerous lawsuits—all of which were tosses out by courts—and giving endless allegations attacking Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic, Sydney Powell’s defense is that “‘Reasonable people’ wouldn’t believe her election fraud claims.”
This means that her defense is to admit she was lying, but that’s okay because the First Amendment.
Of course this ignores the fact that none of the people that believed her were reasonable. Evidence of this is easily seen by the mobs of Trump and Q fans that staged the insurrection of January 6th.
Powell is not the first and probably won’t be the last liar to get creamed in court for blatant abuses of the truth and the First Amendment.
Another case in point is Alex Jones of InfoWars. Jones is being sued by families of the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting that resulted in the deaths if 20 elementary children and some of their teachers. He went on the air screaming that the shooting had been faked and these survivors were “crisis actors” trying to take away gun rights. This resulted in these parents being harassed and attacked by people who actually believed Jones. His response? He’s just an entertainer and his First Amendment rights protect him.
We predict that neither of these professional liars will prevail in court. Certainly Jones has been losing motion after motion and has already had to pay out over $100,000 in sanctions and fines. In both cases, they are in essence admitting to the lies and just accusing their followers of being too stupid to recognize them as such.
Certainly some of these fans are too stupid to realize their mental faculties have been tossed under the bus.
