What Will Future Historians Make of the Trump Era?

There’s just no way the future historians are going to believe any of this happened. After witnessing it and writing about it for ten years myself, it’s all just too surreal.

I sometimes ponder what historians two-hundred, or a hundred, or even fifty years from today will think when they delve into the details of these times. Assuming America still exists in its present form, or whatever supplants our democracy, those historians are going to be utterly incredulous.

You’re telling me the 45th president of the United States, a former realtor and reality television star with zero experience in government was assisted into office by an ex-KGB colonel who helped him smear his opponent? And he and his campaign staff lied under oath to the FBI about that repeatedly? And he wasn’t driven out of office?

And he tried to extort that same KGB colonel’s arch enemy into helping him smear his next opponent four years later? And when he finally was impeached, his party comrades in the Senate refused to convict him?

And then he led a revolt that was carried live on television, not long after because he refused to accept his loss to that opponent? So he summoned thousands of white supremacists, conspiracy theorists and thugs to Washington, directed them to march to the Capitol, then watched for 3 hours and 7 minutes as they ransacked and looted it, beat 140 cops with poles and flag standards and wiped their feces on the walls in the Speaker’s Lobby?

And you’re telling me no one arrested him?

So the opposition impeached him a second time, and even after THIS offense, his party comrades in the Senate refused to convict him?

Then after four years of relative stability, the American people re-elected this same man? Are you KIDDING me? And his first action was to pardon the 1,600 criminals who participated in his coup?

Even though it became known that he tried to strong-arm an official in the state of Georgia to “find” him 11,780 votes? Because that was one more than he needed?

And that his personal lawyer and other cohorts from his campaign were involved in several other attempts to steal that election, including creating bogus electors? And STILL this guy was allowed to walk free?

Then once back in office, he assembled a Cabinet comprised of the least qualified people ever assembled?

A dry-drunk television host with a track record of misogyny and sexual assault to run the Pentagon? A conspiracy theorist and former heroin addict to run Health and Human Services? An absolute sycophant to run the Department of Justice? And a woman with the awareness of slime-mold to oversee the nation’s security?

And he booted the legitimate press from the Pentagon because they refused to take an oath promising to only report “approved” stories? And then he gave the likes of Laura Loomer her own desk at the Pentagon?

Really???????

There’s just no way the future historians are going to believe any of this happened. After witnessing it and writing about it for ten years myself, it’s all just too surreal.

Wake me when he’s dead.
