In the upcoming 2026 and 2028 elections, we’re playing against opponents who don’t bat an eye at cheating because they don’t recognize the validity of the rules that they are breaking.
One of the things that one should understand about the current battle for control of the US is that Trump, MAGA, and those who support them do not believe in a democratic form of government. Rather, they believe that people should not be trusted with the power to choose their leaders. Ironically enough, the election of Trump (twice!) is pretty good evidence for that argument.
Still, even though Americans have often chosen poor leaders over the past 250 years, in the long run the nation has progressed in the direction of more equal opportunity and more equal justice—guiding ideals of the Founders and Lincoln. For those that share those values, the effectiveness of democracy as a form of government has been well demonstrated.
Unfortunately, the fact that democracy has survived bad leaders in the past doesn’t necessarily mean that will happen again. What’s different about the current crisis is that the current leadership of the federal government, partnering with billionaire fascists and powered by the ignorance, stupidity, greed, fear, and self-centeredness of a substantial segment of the population, seeks to disrupt democracy itself. We can’t say for sure that we’ve never before faced a crisis of this nature, that would require a historian. But it doesn’t take a historian to know that we face it now.
In the upcoming 2026 election and the presidential election of 2028, those of us who share the ideals of the Founders and of Lincoln are going to be playing for all the marbles, and we’re playing against opponents who don’t bat an eye at cheating, because they don’t recognize the validity of the rules that they are breaking. For them, the end goal of white male “Christian” fascism and protecting wealth at any cost justifies whatever means will achieve it.
We can win, but only if we go to battle with our eyes open.
Facts inspire us. In fact, after the past four years we love facts even more and the founders of this site are inspired by the idea that the curation and nurturing of facts will actually contribute to the improvement of society and the lives of all of us.
